Abstract

Currently, there is a rising number of elderly people worldwide. By 2020 the percentage of elderly people aged 60+ years should reach 30 % out of the total number of population living in the developed European countries This aging process, however, results in new economic and social issues Therefore there is constant effort to prolong and maintain the active age of these elderly people, who want to lead active, fulfilling and quality life in terms of inclusion, socialization and independence. This can be achieved not only by a continuous support from their family members, but also with the help of modern information and communication technologies (ICT), which can assist elderly people in this process. The purpose of this article is to explore benefits and limitations of using ICT, particularly the smart ones, by the elderly people. In addition, the author of this study emphasizes the importance of appropriate training about the benefits of smart technologies.
