The Hyundai Kona Electric is the first battery-electric powered subcompact SUV. The electric SUV will line up in two power versions with different battery sizes.

The Hyundai Kona Electric is powered by a permanent-magnet synchronous electric motor with 99 kW (135 hp) or 150 kW (204 hp) of output. Both versions have torque of 395 newton metres, which enables the Kona to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds.

The lithium polymer batteries are located in the underbody. According to the Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure, the 39 kWh battery of the basic version is expected to achieve a range of 300 km, while the long-range version will have a battery capacity of 64 kWh, ensuring a range of 470 km.

Kona Electric is Hyundai’s fourth electric model

A fast charging station can charge the battery to 80 percent in only 54 minutes. A complete charging cycle at a wall box is expected to take around six hours for the 99 kW version and a good nine and a half hours for the 150 kW version.

With the exception of the digital instruments, the interior is similar to the combustion engine version. The "Hyundai SmartSense" label covers driving assistance systems such as Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop&Go, Forward Collision Avoidance Assist with Autonomous Emergency Braking, Blind Spot Detection, and Lane Keeping Assist.

The Hyundai Kona Electro will be showcased at the Geneva International Motor Show in 2018. With the Ioniq, the ix35 Fuel Cell SUV and its successor the Nexo, the Korean company has already put three all-electric models into series production.
