New Electric Compact SUV Smart #1 Unveiled

Comeback of the former Smart subcompact car brand: the Mercedes subsidiary has unveiled a new model in Berlin (Germany). The Smart #1 is a battery-electric compact SUV with 200 kW (272 PS) of power.

Smart Automobile is now a 50 : 50 joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Chinese automaker Geely Automobile Group. The new Smart #1 model is 4270 mm long, 1822 mm wide and 1636 mm high. Weighing 1820 kg, the electric car features LED headlights, concealed power door handles, frameless windows and a glass roof. Thanks to the sliding and split-folding rear seat, the trunk offers between 273–411 l of volume.

The interior features a 9.2" digital instrument cluster, with a 10" head-up display above. The infotainment system is operated via a 12.8" touch screen or AI-based voice control. More than 75 % of all control units in the vehicle can be updated via over-the-air updates. A digital key allows the Smart #1 to be shared with other users via app.

New Smart #1 with 200 kW output

The Smart #1’s electric motor produces 200 kW (272 PS) and offers a maximum torque of 343 Nm at the rear wheels. The top speed is 180 km/h. The NCM battery offers a capacity of 66 kWh. This should provide a range of 420–440 km. With 22 kW, the SUV charges up to 80 SoC in 3 h. At a fast charging station, you can get up to 80 % in under 30 min with up to 150 kW. The Smart Pilot system bundles the assistance systems adaptive cruise control with congestion function, active lane departure warning, blind spot assist, highway and traffic jam assist, automatic parking assist, and adaptive high beam assist.
