All Volvo’s New Models to Have an Electric Motor from 2019

Each Volvo model launched from 2019 will be equipped with an electric motor, the Swedish car maker has announced. This marks the end of vehicles equipped solely with an internal combustion engine, and puts electrification of the drive at the core of Volvo’s activities. 

"This is about the customer", says Håkan Samuelsson, President and CEO of Volvo Cars. "People increasingly demand electrified cars, and we want to respond to our customers’ current and future needs. You can now pick and choose whichever electrified Volvo you wish."

Five all-electric cars between 2019 and 2021

Volvo Cars is planning to launch a portfolio of electrified vehicles across its model range that comprises fully electric cars, plug-in hybrid cars and mild-hybrid cars. Volvo is to launch five fully electric cars between 2019 and 2021, three of which are to be Volvo models and two of which are to be high performance electric cars from Polestar, Volvo’s performance car brand. 

In addition to these electric cars, Volvo plans to launch a range of petrol and diesel plug-in hybrid vehicles, as well as vehicles with a mild-hybrid 48-volt option, throughout its entire model range. This means that, from 2019, there will be no new Volvo models without an electric motor. Vehicles with a pure combustion engine will gradually be replaced by vehicles with an electrically-assisted combustion engine.

End of the pure combustion engine

"This announcement marks the end of the solely combustion engine-powered car", explains Håkan Samuelsson. "Volvo Cars has stated that it plans to have sold a total of one million electrified cars by 2025. When we said it, we meant it. This is how we are going to do it."

Just a few days ago, Volvo had announced that the Polestar Performance Division would be transformed into an independent brand for high-performance electrified vehicles. Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Cars, Thomas Ingenlath, is assuming the role of Chief Executive Officer at Polestar.
