The aim of this work, consisting of 9 individual, self-contained booklets, is to describe commercial vehicle technology in a way that is clear, concise and illustrative. Compact and easy to understand, it provides an overview of the technology that goes into modern commercial vehicles.Starting from the customer's fundamental requirements, the characteristics and systems that define the design of the vehicles are presented knowledgeably in a series of articles, each of which can be read and studied on their own.
This volume, Electrical Systems and Mechatronics, offers an introduction to the mechatronics in a commercial vehicle. The electrical and electronic systems are presented, up to and including the advanced driver assistance systems. The compressed air system and the commercial vehicle brake are explained to give the reader a comprehensive overview, such as is helpful for understanding in training and in practice.

Chapter 1. Electrical Systems and Mechatronics
Michael HilgersAbstractEven the motor vehicle patented by Carl Benz in 1886 already included an electrical component: the battery with make-and-break ignition. The radio could be considered one of the first complex electrical systems, which was installed in US vehicles around 1940. The first true electronic systems with complex semiconductor circuits were implemented in engine controllers in the 1960s. -

Chapter 3. Brake System
Michael HilgersAbstractThe braking function fulfills three tasks: It serves to reduce the speed of the vehicle (i.e. decelerates it more rapidly than the effect of ubiquitous friction alone), it helps to control the vehicle’s speed when traveling downhill, and it keeps the vehicle at rest when it is stopped or parked. -
Chapter 4. From Advanced Driver Assistance Systems to Automated Driving
Michael HilgersAbstractAdvanced driver assistance system (ADAS) is the term used to refer to those systems which help the driver either by taking over a task the driver would otherwise have to carry out manually, or by fulfilling a function which is beyond the capabilities of the driver. These systems are predominantly aiming to increase safety. One of the great advantages of assistance systems is that, unlike the driver, they never get fatigue and cannot be distracted. -
Chapter 5. Telematic Systems
Michael HilgersAbstractVehicle systems that exchange data beyond the vehicle are often discussed using the umbrella term telematic systems. Telematics is a newly coined word from the two terms telecommunications and informatics. The information exchange used for automated driving (vehicle to vehicle and vehicle to infrastructure) is usually not subsumed under telematics. -
