With the spectre of poverty looming large, the practice of human trafficking is a disturbing truth for many women in the North East. Hasina Kharbhih began working in the 1990s to fight this menace. She later set up an organization, Impulse Social Enterprises, to help hundreds of women artisans become financially secure. The aim of this organization is not only to maximize financial returns for shareholders, but also to grow the social venture and effectively increase the social sustainability of more women. Mentoring takes place at many levels, from helping to design inputs, sourcing products, and also training women on banking matters—all with the intent of giving them an identity and making them independent entrepreneurs. The income generated from weaving supplements the household income as a welcome surplus and has ensured the active participation of women in socio-economic decision-making processes at home and in the community.
