Abstract

In this period, though the Cold War conditions prevailed, its repressive effects began to wane. The détente period had ended with the Reagan administration (1981–1989), and the new phase of engagement started. However, as the superpowers began to tackle with the crisis in Iran in 1979, Iran-Iraq War in 1980–1988, and Afghanistan War in 1979–1988, their ability to impose bloc politics and to constrain acts of their respective allies disappeared as well. This period for Turkish foreign policy was signified not only as a period of re-engagement with the United States, but also as a period of searching for new contours and openings.
