Abstract

This chapter delves into the development and testing of a bio-inspired 3-DOF X-structure designed for simultaneous energy harvesting and vibration isolation in three directions: vertical, horizontal, and in-plane rotation. Inspired by animal limbs, the X-structure incorporates piezoelectric cantilevers to convert mechanical energy into electrical power, showcasing high-static and low-dynamic nonlinear stiffness. The experimental setup and results highlight the structure's ability to achieve broadband, low-frequency energy harvesting and effective vibration isolation. The chapter provides a detailed analysis of the X-structure's performance under various harmonic excitations, demonstrating its potential for applications in heavy trucks, ships, railway trains, and construction machinery. The study also discusses the implications of motion coupling and offers insights into optimizing the structure for enhanced performance in ultra-low-frequency environments, such as ocean waves. The comprehensive evaluation of the X-structure's energy harvesting and vibration isolation characteristics makes this chapter a valuable resource for understanding the dual-function capabilities of dynamic structures.
