Abstract

The article explores the critical interactions within deep twin tunnels connected by a transverse gallery, focusing on the deformation of rock and the structural behavior of the tunnels. It highlights the importance of understanding these interactions for the optimal design and safety of tunneling operations. The study employs advanced 3D finite element analysis to model the complex mechanical interactions and time-dependent properties of the rock and lining materials. Key topics include the formulation of constitutive models that capture both instantaneous and delayed deformation in deep clayey rocks, the impact of aging viscoelastic properties of the lining material, and the simulation of excavation and lining installation processes. The article provides detailed numerical simulations that illustrate the ability of the proposed models to handle highly complex settings, offering preliminary insights into the involved interactions. It also discusses the implications of these findings for the design of tunnel-gallery junctions, emphasizing the need to consider deformation anisotropy and the disturbed region near the junction. The article concludes with recommendations for future research, including the simulation of shallow depth tunnels and the integration of poromechanical coupling in the modeling process.
