Abstract

The chapter presents a detailed comparison of conventional and custom heat treatment procedures for Inconel 718 alloy processed through Cold Metal Transfer (CMT) technology. It delves into the challenges posed by the anisotropic microstructure resulting from CMT processing and the need for tailored heat treatment practices to achieve optimal mechanical properties. The study benchmarks two heat treatment conditions, one based on standard practices and the other on a customized approach, evaluating their effects on microstructure, chemical composition, Vickers microhardness, and static tensile properties at room temperature. The findings reveal that while both treatments enhance mechanical properties, the custom heat treatment shows promise in dissolving detrimental phases and improving microhardness. However, further optimization is needed to achieve complete recrystallization and isotropic mechanical properties. The chapter concludes with recommendations for future research to refine heat treatment practices for CMT-processed Inconel 718, aiming to produce parts with performance comparable to conventionally processed alloys while reducing lead time and costs.
