Abstract

The article delves into the familiarization and usage patterns of generative AI (GenAI) tools among biology students at the post-secondary level in Norway. It reveals that while students appreciate GenAI for academic purposes, they also express concerns about academic dishonesty, ethical considerations, and the reliability of AI-generated content. The study underscores the importance of involving students in the decision-making processes that shape their educational tools and experiences, advocating for a 'Students as Partners' approach. This approach emphasizes shared responsibility and the inclusion of student voices in developing guidelines and practices for GenAI use. The findings highlight the need for clear, balanced guidelines and proper training to navigate the complexities of GenAI in education, ensuring that these tools support rather than hinder student learning. The article also discusses the evolving attitudes of students towards GenAI, reflecting a global trend towards regulated use and institutional embrace of these technologies. It provides a nuanced perspective on the potential benefits and challenges of GenAI in higher education, offering insights into how educators and institutions can best support students in this rapidly changing landscape.
