A Case Study on Stability and Economic Analysis of Earthen Dam

This case study delves into the stability and economic analysis of earthen dams, specifically comparing them with rock-fill dams in the southern part of Nepal. The research focuses on the Ghumauri Irrigation Dam site, located in the Nawalparasi district, and aims to determine the most cost-effective and environmentally friendly option for small to medium-sized water retaining projects. The study employs the GeoStudio software for seepage and stability analysis, utilizing finite element code to simulate various scenarios. Key topics include the design and geometry of the dam, the assessment of dam stability under different critical conditions such as end of construction, full reservoir, and quick drawdown, and the optimization of the dam's cross-section based on stability and seepage analysis. The findings reveal that the earth-fill dam is nearly 22% cheaper than the rock-fill dam, making it a more economical choice for the region. The research concludes that earth-fill dams can be a better option for planning and execution, particularly in areas where the transportation cost of boulders is high. This study provides valuable insights for geotechnical engineers, local and provincial governmental bodies, and implementing agencies involved in dam construction and water resource management.
