Abstract

This chapter delves into the cognitive study of community perceptions regarding speed bumps in urban dwellings, focusing on their role in traffic calming and safety enhancement. The study examines the effectiveness of speed bumps in reducing vehicle speeds and their impact on different road users, including pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. It explores the factors influencing road user compliance with speed bumps, such as familiarity, necessity, and comfort, as well as the credibility of these measures in traffic management. The research employs a questionnaire-based survey to gather data from drivers in various cities, analyzing their perceptions and behaviors through advanced statistical methods like Exploratory Factor Analysis and Second-Order Confirmatory Factor Analysis. The study also investigates the design and implementation of speed bumps, highlighting their advantages and drawbacks. Additionally, it compares different traffic calming measures, such as speed humps and chicanes, and their effectiveness in various urban settings. The findings provide valuable insights into the necessity of community perception in the implementation of traffic calming measures, particularly speed bumps, in residential, institutional, and school areas. The study concludes with recommendations for improving the design and placement of speed bumps to enhance their effectiveness and community acceptance.
