Abstract

This chapter delves into the comparative analysis of noise and vibration generation in conventional and electric buses operating in Montreal. The study quantifies the noise and vibration levels in both bus types, revealing that electric buses generate significantly lower levels of both noise and vibration compared to their conventional counterparts. Rider perceptions of these vibroacoustic levels are also assessed, showing a preference for electric buses due to their lower noise and vibration levels. The chapter further develops rider-centric models for predicting noise and vibration perceptions, which can be used to evaluate and improve the comfort and sustainability of bus transit systems. The findings underscore the benefits of transitioning to electric buses for enhancing environmental sustainability and rider comfort in urban transit systems.
