Abstract

This chapter delves into the comparative study of flooding impacts on food security in urban Blantyre City and rural Chikwawa, Malawi. It begins by setting the context of rapid urbanization and climate change, highlighting the vulnerabilities of both regions to extreme weather events. The study analyzes climate trends, climate risks, and river discharge data to understand flooding events, particularly focusing on the 2019 floods caused by Tropical Cyclone Idai. It explores the sources of food consumed in both locations, the effects of flooding on household food security, and the agricultural and food flows between these areas. The research reveals how flooding disrupts food production, access, and availability, exacerbating food insecurity among poor households. The study underscores the need for coordinated efforts to build resilience in both urban and rural areas to mitigate the adverse effects of flooding on food security, emphasizing the interconnectedness of these regions.
