Abstract

This chapter explores the challenges and solutions related to marine debris cleanup, focusing on the optimization of vessel routes. It introduces the Marine Debris Collection Problem (MDCP) and the dynamic nature of debris movement due to currents, winds, and tides. The text presents a novel Competition-Based Large Neighborhood Search (CLNS) algorithm designed to improve the efficiency of debris collection. The algorithm is compared with existing methods, such as the Hybrid Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search-Wolf Pack Algorithm (HALNS-WPA) and its modified version (MHALNS-WPA). The computational study demonstrates the superior performance of CLNS in large-scale instances, highlighting its faster convergence and better overall metrics. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the limitations of the current approach and suggestions for future research, emphasizing the need to incorporate debris mobility and optimized coverage strategies for cleanup vessels.
