Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical role of segmentation architectures in modern computer vision systems, particularly for autonomous navigation and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). It explores five key architectures: Fully Convolutional Networks (FCN), U-Net, DeepLab, Mask R-CNN, and YOLO, each offering unique advantages for tasks such as object detection, scene understanding, and real-time processing. The chapter provides a timeline of their development, from 2015 to 2024, and discusses their applications in various domains, including medical imaging, satellite analysis, and autonomous driving. Case studies highlight the practical implications of these architectures, such as improved accuracy in urban street scene segmentation and real-time object detection in dynamic environments. The chapter concludes with a comparison of these architectures, evaluating their speed, training time, model size, and suitability for different use cases. This comprehensive review offers valuable insights for professionals seeking to enhance the perception systems of autonomous vehicles and ITS, ultimately contributing to safer and more efficient transportation systems.
