Abstract

This chapter delves into the intricate world of piled raft foundations (PRFs), exploring how pile number and spacing influence load distribution between the raft and piles. It begins with an introduction to PRFs, emphasizing their cost-effectiveness and efficiency in soft soils. The theoretical approaches section discusses foundational models by Poulos and Davis, Randolph, and Horikoshi, highlighting the role of stiffness ratios and pile-raft interaction. The chapter then advances to recent models and correction factors, such as α PR, C adj, and C e, which enhance the accuracy of load-sharing predictions, especially in nonlinear conditions. A significant portion of the text is dedicated to the effects of pile number and spacing on load distribution, presenting data from various analytical models. The conclusion underscores the importance of considering both pile number and spacing in PRF design, recommending a pile spacing of 2.5D–4D and a stiffness ratio near unity for optimal performance. This chapter is a valuable resource for professionals seeking to improve their understanding of PRF behavior and design practices.
