Abstract

This article delves into the intricate world of nitrogen control in steelmaking, focusing on the current and future challenges faced by the industry. It begins by examining the dual role of nitrogen in steel, where it can both enhance and detrimentally affect mechanical properties. The article explores the mechanisms of nitrogen absorption and desorption in liquid steel, highlighting the importance of understanding these processes for precise control during steelmaking operations. It discusses the impact of various process parameters, such as temperature, pressure, and chemical composition, on nitrogen solubility and kinetics. The article also reviews the current practices in nitrogen control, including the use of different steelmaking routes like BF-BOF and EAF, and the role of bottom stirring and top lancing in nitrogen removal. Additionally, it explores the potential challenges and solutions for nitrogen control in future green steelmaking routes, such as the pre-reduction-REF-BOF and pre-reduction-scrap-EAF routes. The article concludes with a summary of nitrogen sources, absorption mechanisms, and pick-up reduction techniques, providing a comprehensive overview of the strategies for minimizing nitrogen pick-up and optimizing nitrogen removal in steelmaking operations. This detailed analysis makes the article a valuable resource for professionals seeking to understand and optimize nitrogen control in steelmaking processes.
