Abstract

The article introduces a computational musculoskeletal arm model designed to assess muscle dysfunction in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients. Traditional methods like spirometry and the 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) test have limitations in predicting outcomes and identifying vulnerable patients. The proposed model, based on a second-order task-specific computational approach, aims to improve the assessment of functional capacity by incorporating upper-extremity muscle forces into the existing UEF kinematic model. The model was evaluated using EMG data from COPD patients and compared with healthy control participants, revealing promising results that could enhance the accuracy of functional capacity assessment and predict adverse outcomes among COPD patients.
