Abstract

This chapter introduces a conceptual framework for designing network communication in automation systems, leveraging Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) as the backbone network and OPC UA for data modeling. It discusses the hierarchical pyramid model of automation systems and the emergence of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) paradigm, which proposes a flat model for automation. The chapter delves into the features of TSN, such as credit-based shaper, time-aware shaper, and frame preemption, and explains how OPC UA facilitates secure data exchange between devices. It also explores the use of model-based engineering and component-based software engineering for automation system development. The proposed framework aims to unify network protocols and simplify the configuration of OPC UA over TSN, making it a promising solution for reducing network management complexity in automation systems.
