Abstract

This chapter explores the development of a detachable grain silo designed to minimize spoilage and transportation costs in India's agricultural sector. The study focuses on four key areas: material testing of food-grade plastics, geometric design of the silo, development of detachable components, and the introduction of a turnkey mechanism to reduce deformation. Material testing involved evaluating the tension, compression, and flexural characteristics of 3D-printed samples of PA6 and PLA. PLA was selected for its enhanced flexural rigidity. The silo's design features a cylindrical tank with a hopper, ensuring smooth unloading of grains. The detachable components are interconnected using mechanical interlocking, allowing for easy assembly and disassembly without heavy equipment. The turnkey mechanism applies lateral pressure to the external surface of the silo, mitigating internal pressure from stored grains. The study concludes with a proposed design for detachable grain silos, highlighting the potential benefits for farmers and consumers alike.
