Abstract

This chapter delves into the reliability of the shear strength provisions for fibre reinforced concrete (FRC) members without shear reinforcement as outlined in the prEN1992-1-1:2021 standard. It begins by introducing the advantages of FRC over conventional reinforced concrete and the necessity of reliable ultimate limit state (ULS) design models for its use. The chapter then presents the prEN1992-1-1:2021 model for the shear strength of FRC members without shear reinforcement, highlighting the differences and expansions from the existing RC model. A crucial aspect of the study is the assessment of the model error using a comprehensive database of experimental results. The chapter describes the methodology for determining the model error and the criteria used to filter the database for relevance. The study also involves a parametric analysis using the First Order Reliability Method (FORM) to calibrate the FRC partial factor γ SF, ensuring that the required code-prescribed probabilities of failure are achieved. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the importance of this reliability-based calibration for the safe and efficient use of FRC in structural design.
