Abstract

This chapter explores the integration of virtual reality (VR) into job hazard analysis (JHA) in the construction industry to enhance safety and hazard identification. The study reviews the current JHA process, highlighting its limitations such as ineffective worker participation, communication gaps, and resistance to change. It proposes a VR-based framework to address these challenges and improve hazard detection through immersive and interactive visualization. The research methodology includes a qualitative case study with expert interviews and site visits to gather insights on the current JHA process and the potential of VR integration. Key findings include the benefits of VR in hazard detection, especially for new and inexperienced professionals, and the challenges in implementing VR technology on construction sites. The study concludes that while VR has significant potential to improve construction safety, practical challenges such as access to infrastructure and user acceptance must be addressed for successful integration. The chapter also discusses the role of subcontractors in JHA and the importance of effective safety meetings and pre-task planning (PTP) in fostering a proactive safety culture. The proposed VR framework aims to enhance the JHA process by providing a visual and immersive experience that allows workers and safety professionals to explore hazards in a controlled environment.
