Abstract

The chapter begins by emphasizing the potential of hydrogen to contribute significantly to global emission reductions by 2050, with over 680 large-scale hydrogen projects worth $240 billion announced worldwide. It explores the political and commercial momentum behind green hydrogen, highlighting initiatives like the Mission Innovation and the International Partnership for a Hydrogen Economy. The study identifies key challenges such as high production costs, limited infrastructure, and regulatory frameworks, and discusses the investment gap needed to close the $700 billion investment gap by 2030. The green hydrogen value chain is dissected into stages including production, compression, storage, transportation, and utilization, with each stage presenting unique challenges. The paper also synthesizes policy learnings from leading countries like Japan, South Korea, Germany, the USA, and China, identifying key strategies such as setting long-term visions, establishing legal frameworks, promoting regional decentralization, and fostering international collaborations. These insights provide a roadmap for countries aiming to develop a sustainable hydrogen economy.
