Abstract

The article introduces a GNN-based predictor designed to optimize the search for high-performance quantum circuits in the era of noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices. Variational Quantum Algorithms (VQAs) have shown promise in leveraging quantum advantages, but their performance heavily depends on the structure of the quantum circuits. The proposed GNN-based predictor represents quantum circuits as directed acyclic graphs (DAGs) and uses an asynchronous message-passing scheme to encode circuit structures, mimicking quantum computational routines. This predictor is trained on a small number of circuits and can filter out poorly performing ones, significantly improving the sample efficiency of Quantum Architecture Search (QAS) algorithms. Simulation results on variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) for transverse field Ising models demonstrate the predictor's ability to find optimal quantum circuits, outperforming random search strategies. The article concludes by highlighting the potential of the predictor in other VQAs and future directions for improving sample efficiency and combining with different search strategies.
