Abstract

The chapter introduces a lean framework for developing circular business models, combining theories from lean management and the circular economy. It discusses the debate surrounding lean phenomena and its potential for sustainability. The research is based on a longitudinal case study of a Norwegian multinational original equipment manufacturer, highlighting successful initiatives and the development of a sustainable design tool. The findings suggest that a lean strategy can effectively support the development of circular business models, with the R-strategies acting as useful frames for forming new solutions. The chapter concludes with a framework for lean circular business models, emphasizing the importance of addressing past, present, and future challenges in parallel.
