Abstract

This chapter delves into the complexities of project scheduling by introducing the Preemptive Flexible-Mode Multi-Skilled Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (P-FM-MS-RCPSP). It extends the traditional RCPSP by incorporating preemption, flexible-mode tasks, and multi-skilled resources, offering a more dynamic and adaptable approach to project management. The chapter presents a detailed MILP formulation tailored to the P-FM-MS-RCPSP, leveraging time-indexed variables and a wide-ranging set of decision variables to optimize task assignments, modes, and resource allocations over time. Computational experiments are conducted on empirical benchmark instances to evaluate the model's performance, demonstrating its effectiveness in reducing project makespan and enhancing resource utilization. The chapter also discusses the limitations of the model, particularly its scalability challenges with larger problem instances, and suggests areas for future research to address these constraints. The conclusion highlights the model's potential to improve project management practices across various industries, ultimately leading to increased efficiency and effectiveness in project execution.
