Abstract

The article explores the complex process of constructing data visualizations through programming, highlighting the iterative and exploratory nature of these tasks. It introduces a multi-method approach that combines data visualization, learning analytics, and epistemic network analysis to uncover the intricate trajectories learners take when engaging with programming environments. The study identifies six key moves that students perform, such as program creation, data inspection, and visual design, each reflecting different aspects of computational and data-related practices. By analyzing log data from a workshop, the research reveals how students' engagement with these moves evolves over time, providing a nuanced understanding of the learning processes involved in data visualization programming. The findings underscore the importance of supporting students in navigating these various moves, suggesting that sustained engagement with the same tool over multiple sessions can enhance their ability to develop both design and analytical reasoning. The article also discusses the pedagogical and methodological implications of these insights, emphasizing the need for tools and activities that foster a comprehensive understanding of data visualization practices.
