Abstract

This chapter ventures into the expansive field of Big History, which extends the scope of traditional history to encompass the evolution of the universe, life on Earth, and the development of culture and technology. It posits that the various evolutionary processes—physical, biological, cultural, and technological—are not isolated phenomena but are interconnected and accelerating over time. The chapter delves into the concept of a Period-Doubling Cascade, a chaotic phenomenon that may underlie the accelerating pace of evolution. By examining the teaching patterns of human ancestors, the chapter provides empirical support for this theory, suggesting that the intervals between significant evolutionary innovations follow a predictable pattern. The chapter also explores the role of information transmission in evolution, from the earliest forms of life to the advent of Information Technology. It proposes that the evolution of teaching methods and tools has been driven by the need to transmit increasingly complex information to subsequent generations. The chapter concludes by discussing the implications of this theory for understanding the past, present, and future of evolution, and for addressing contemporary challenges such as climate change and the Anthropocene.
