Abstract

This chapter investigates the influence of sans serif typography on the regional identity of the Midlands during the nineteenth century, focusing on the work of jobbing printers. It explores how the growth of sans serif printing types coincided with the expansion of jobbing printing in Birmingham and the Midlands, driven by population growth and technological advancements. The chapter also highlights the innovative use of sans serif typography in political and instructional printing, demonstrating its versatility and impact on the region's cultural and social landscape. Through case studies, such as the work of Hudson & Son, the chapter illustrates how sans serif typography was used to address different social groups and convey information effectively. The research maps the development of sans serif typography from its initial use in large sizes to its refined application in smaller sizes, showing its evolution and significance in the region's typographic history.
