Abstract

The chapter delves into the intricacies of geotechnical engineering, focusing on the inherent variability of ground properties and the need for accurate modeling despite common simplifications. It discusses the challenges posed by soil variability and the consequences of oversimplification in design processes. The author presents probabilistic methods and advanced modeling techniques, such as the Enhanced Limit Method and Random Field analysis, to mitigate these challenges. Case studies are used to illustrate the implications of seepage and groundwater fluctuations on earth structures, showcasing the benefits of these advanced techniques. The chapter also explores the use of big data and physical modeling to enhance the understanding and management of geotechnical risks, making it a comprehensive resource for professionals seeking to improve their practices in this field.
