Abstract

The chapter explores the growing attention to talent management (TM) and the challenges it faces despite increased engagement. It introduces a novel, competency-based approach to defining talent, which is central to successful TM programs. The authors review the evolution of competency-based human resource management (HRM), highlighting various definitions and models of competencies. They also examine the complexities and tensions in defining talent, such as the object-subject tension and the innate-acquired tension. The study presents empirical data from Hungarian corporations, showing that competencies play a significant role in defining talent. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the importance of a competency-based approach in TM and suggests areas for further research.
