Abstract

This chapter introduces a novel front-end circuit designed to digitally convert QCM-D responses for FPGA-based frequency measurements. The Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation Monitoring (QCM-D) technique allows simultaneous measurement of resonance frequency and dissipation factor, but typically requires complex laboratory instrumentation. The proposed circuit addresses this challenge by converting the QCM-D transient response into a square wave, processable by digital hardware, while preserving the resonance frequency. The circuit includes an Automatic Gain Control (AGC) amplifying stage and a low-distortion mixer, interfaced with an FPGA via a high-speed optocoupler. Experimental results demonstrate improved frequency measurement accuracy and reduced error compared to classical sine-to-square converter architectures, highlighting the importance of proper analog pre-processing in digital frequency measurement systems.
