Abstract

This chapter explores a novel one-dimensional approach to measuring human activeness using a single Passive Infrared (PIR) sensor, addressing the need for simpler and more efficient activity monitoring systems. The study introduces a hypothesis that the interval times between consecutive motion detections can indicate human activeness levels. A one-dimensional activeness model is developed and simulated over 28,800 steps per day, with the results compared to real-world data collected over a 28-day period. The chapter discusses the practical data collection process using a Raspberry Pi 4B integrated with a PIR sensor and presents the results of the simulation, including velocity distributions and interval time histograms. The study highlights the obtained features and limitations of the proposed system, emphasizing its cost-effectiveness and privacy-conscious design. The novelty of the system is underscored by its ability to provide quantitative activeness measurements using a single sensor, setting it apart from existing multi-sensor approaches. The chapter concludes with a discussion on the potential applications of the system in smart home automation and workplace monitoring, as well as future directions for research, including two- and three-dimensional modeling and the integration of additional sensor modalities.
