Abstract

The chapter presents a groundbreaking method for diagnosing bolt-loosening faults in open beam-type structures, a common issue in civil and mechanical engineering. Traditional methods often overlook nonlinear boundary conditions and require extensive reference data. This novel approach, however, incorporates these conditions and uses a local sub-model to simplify the diagnostic process. The method is validated through experimental studies on a laboratory bolted beam-like steel structure, demonstrating its effectiveness in accurately identifying and locating bolt-loosening faults even in the presence of nonlinear boundaries. The chapter also compares the new method with existing ones, highlighting its superior performance and practical applicability.
