Abstract

The article presents a novel approach to slope protection using an unsaturated drainage layer (UDL) within capillary barrier covers (CBCs). Traditional CBCs are prone to percolation in humid regions, but the addition of a UDL improves drainage performance, preventing infiltration and reducing the risk of slope failure. The study combines physical model testing under heavy rainfall and numerical simulation using COMSOL to validate the preliminary design criterion for the UDL. The research demonstrates that the UDL effectively discharges infiltrating water, preventing CBC percolation. Crucially, the saturated permeability coefficient of the UDL must exceed a critical value to achieve an ideal drainage state. The air entry value of the UDL should also surpass the residual value of the coarse layer, with the saturated permeability coefficient of the UDL recommended to be 100 times that of the fine layer. This study provides a reliable engineering solution for slope protection in humid regions, highlighting the importance of material selection and compaction control for optimal UDL performance.
