Abstract

This study delves into the diverse ways individuals conceptualize happiness and how these beliefs influence their well-being. By employing a person-centered approach, the research identifies three distinct subgroups: skeptics, happiness seekers, and growth seekers, each with unique patterns of happiness beliefs. Skeptics view happiness as fragile, external, and potentially negative, while happiness seekers embrace a hedonistic, 'seize the moment' attitude. Growth seekers, on the other hand, focus on eudaimonic virtues like meaning and self-actualization, believing happiness is within their control. The study finds that these distinct happiness conceptions significantly impact individuals' well-being, with growth seekers reporting the highest levels of well-being, followed by happiness seekers and skeptics. This research highlights the importance of considering individuals' unique belief systems in promoting well-being and suggests tailored interventions based on these distinct psychological profiles. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the heterogeneity in happiness conceptions and their relationships with experienced well-being, offering valuable insights for both research and practical applications in well-being promotion.
