Abstract

The article introduces a novel method for designing 3D chiral auxetic metamaterials using topology optimization and the boundary-based level set method. The method is specifically tailored for additive manufacturing, ensuring that the designed microstructures have clear and smooth boundaries that can be directly printed without post-processing. The design process involves the use of the numerical homogenization theory to evaluate the micro-structural properties and a matrix-compressed parametric level set method to represent the material distribution. The article also discusses the optimization formulation for chiral auxetics, including geometric symmetry constraints to induce the rotational mechanism in the microstructures. Several optimized 3D chiral microstructures are presented, along with their simulation and experimental results, which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The article concludes with a failure test that highlights the energy absorption capabilities of the devised chiral NPR metamaterials, showcasing their potential in the construction of protection devices.
