A Review of Chemoresistive Hydrogen Gas Sensors Based on Low-Dimensional Materials

Low-dimensional materials have shown great potential for gas sensing because of their unique chemical and physical properties, such as high electron mobility and high surface-to-volume ratios. Mostly, low-dimensional materials possess high electron mobility; however, some suffer from limited carrier mobility. These materials can remarkably enhance the response of chemoresistive gas sensors. Humans cannot detect colorless and odorless H₂ gas. Thus, an ultrasensitive sensor is desirable for detecting H₂ leakage during production, usage, and storage. The purpose of this review is to provide the most recent experimental advancements in the use of various low-dimensional materials for H₂ gas sensing. This paper reviews chemoresistive H₂ gas sensors that employ low-dimensional materials for sensing to reveal the challenges and opportunities for H₂ gas detection. In addition, several computational studies on the adsorption of H₂ molecules on low-dimensional materials have been conducted.
