Abstract

This chapter explores the impact of sand dams on landscapes in semi-arid regions, focusing on the Kanthuni Valley in Kenya's Makueni District. By comparing a study area with 17 sand dams to a control site, the authors use the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) derived from Landsat satellite images to assess vegetation changes over two decades. The study reveals a significant positive impact on vegetation health and growth, with sand dams enhancing resilience during dry periods. The methodology, which involves a big-data approach in cloud computing environments, is highlighted as a robust tool for monitoring large-scale environmental changes. The findings suggest that sand dams are a cost-effective and sustainable mitigation measure for water scarcity, contributing to soil stabilization and preventing erosion. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the potential for further research and application of this approach in other semi-arid and arid regions.
