Abstract

This chapter explores the development and application of a semi-distributed hydrological model using ArcSWAT for the Damoh District in Madhya Pradesh, India. The study focuses on addressing water management challenges exacerbated by agriculture, population growth, urbanization, and climate change. Key topics include the integration of spatially explicit data on topography, soil properties, land use, and climate to simulate surface runoff, sediment transport, nutrient cycling, and water yield. The model's ability to represent spatial variability of hydrological processes is highlighted, enabling the assessment of land management practices, climate fluctuations, and land use modifications. The study also examines the effectiveness of soil and water conservation measures, such as check dams, contour bunding, and afforestation, in reducing soil erosion and enhancing groundwater recharge. The findings reveal that 64% of the total flow is converted into surface runoff, with 58% of total precipitation contributing to streamflow. The model outputs indicate a good infiltration capacity and significant potential for developing a comprehensive water management plan to support sustainable groundwater use and optimize overall water resources.
