A simple and fast measurement algorithm for power system flicker severity evaluation

Abstract

The increasing utilization of nonlinear loads in power systems leads to voltage fluctuations and instability. Power system flicker, reflecting the subjective perception of fluctuating luminance, is a crucial index for assessing power quality. Existing flicker measurement methods have limitations such as spectral leakage and sensitivity to noise. This article proposes a simple and fast flicker analysis algorithm based on a simplified equivalent model. The algorithm extracts the flicker envelope using the Hilbert transform and Nuttall window, and estimates flicker parameters through interpolation FFT and least-squares methods. The proposed method meets IEC standards, simplifies the calculation process, and is suitable for embedded systems. Simulation and laboratory experiments validate the effectiveness and accuracy of the algorithm, demonstrating its practical applicability in power systems.
