Abstract

This chapter provides a sociological explanation of Shenzhen's innovation-driven development, focusing on the interplay between society, markets, and enterprises. It explores the social implications of transitioning to a market economy, emphasizing the role of division of labor and social solidarity. The text also examines the importance of cultural values in shaping economic development, drawing on insights from Max Weber and Mariano Grondona. Additionally, it delves into the dynamics of social networks and industrial clusters, highlighting how these factors contribute to Shenzhen's status as the 'Capital of Private Enterprises in China'. The chapter concludes by discussing Shenzhen's crisis awareness and transformation through innovation, underscoring the city's unique sociocultural characteristics and its ability to adapt and thrive in a rapidly changing economic landscape.
Some parts of this chapter have been published, see the High-quality Development from the Perspective of Social Drivers: A Case Study of the Formation and Development of Shenzhen’s Innovation Economy written by Zhang Meng and Dai Xin, Shenzhen Social Sciences, No. 5, 2020; the Markets and Government in Economic Development: A Summary of and Reflection on Shenzhen’s 40 Years of Innovative Transformation, Open Times written by Tang Jie, No. 4, 2020.
