Abstract

The article introduces a novel passive communication-based islanding detection technique that utilizes superimposed negative sequence components of voltage and current. This technique is designed to detect islanding events within 129 ms, with minimal power quality impact and no false signals in fault cases. The method is tested under various conditions, including zero power mismatch, active power mismatch, reactive power mismatch, DG disconnection, and unbalanced loads. It also handles non-islanding events such as different faults, load switching, and nonlinear load switching. The proposed technique is validated in a real-time environment using OPAL-RT laboratory, demonstrating its practical applicability. The article concludes by highlighting the superior performance of the proposed method compared to existing techniques, making it a valuable resource for professionals in the field of power system engineering and renewable energy integration.
