A strategy for optimal and selective utilization of multiple interline DC power flow controllers in VSC-HVDC grids

Abstract

The article addresses the challenge of securing future VSC-HVDC grids interconnecting offshore wind farms and onshore AC networks. With the expansion of these grids, the risk of line overloading increases, necessitating the use of DC power flow controllers (DC-PFCs) to manage power flow. The study introduces a strategy based on minimum spanning tree (MST) graph theory and the Kruskal algorithm to identify areas prone to overloading and proposes a new mixed-integer power injection modeling (MI-PIM) for optimal IDC-PFC placement and operation. This approach reduces computational burden and enhances the system's steady-state security by selectively activating IDC-PFCs. The method is validated through case studies and dynamic simulations, demonstrating its effectiveness in managing overloading scenarios and optimizing power flow in large-scale VSC-HVDC grids.
