Abstract

The article presents a sustainable biorefinery approach for utilizing macroalgal biomass to co-produce bioactive nutraceuticals and biodiesel. It discusses the extraction and purification of polysaccharides from four types of macroalgae, evaluating their bioactivities such as antioxidant, anticancer, and antityrosinase properties. Additionally, it explores the potential of lipids extracted from residual biomass for biodiesel production, highlighting the favorable fatty acid profiles and biodiesel qualities. The study emphasizes the zero-waste strategy, making it a promising solution for sustainable industries. The research also underscores the potential of rare sugars in polysaccharides as low-calorie sweeteners, contributing to the nutraceutical value of macroalgae.
