Abstract

This survey delves into the expanding landscape of decomposition methods for large language models, focusing on both algorithmic and contextual approaches. It explores how decomposition can address challenges in post-training adaptation and inference-time reasoning, enhancing the efficiency and performance of LLMs. The survey categorizes 29 decomposition methods into two primary perspectives: algorithmic decomposition, which involves partitioning weight matrices and factoring them into low-rank components, and contextual decomposition, which serves as a semantic tool for breaking down documents and questions into simpler units. Notable methods include MiLoRA, KronA, and LoLDU for algorithmic decomposition, and DETQUS, RePD, and Decompose-ToM for contextual decomposition. The survey concludes that decomposition is a versatile strategy for interpretability, modular reasoning, training stability, and adaptive control across both learning and inference stages in LLM workflows. It also highlights the need for future research to integrate geometric interpretations and unify algorithmic and contextual decomposition into a cohesive framework.
