Abstract

This chapter explores a sustainable and cost-effective timber retrofit design aimed at enhancing the structural and energy performance of existing masonry buildings, particularly those in Eastern Canada. The research focuses on less notable masonry buildings, which, while not architecturally significant, make up a large portion of the region's building stock. The proposed retrofit system improves in-plane lateral resistance and thermal performance, making it a key feature for large renovation and reuse projects. Structural testing at McGill University's Jamieson Structural Laboratory demonstrates the effectiveness of the retrofit in preventing catastrophic failures during seismic events, with retrofitted walls showing a significant increase in structural performance compared to un-retrofitted walls. The use of wood fibreboard insulation panels in the retrofit substantially improves the overall thermal resistance of the URM walls, with both physical testing and simulation modelling confirming the effectiveness of the thermal retrofit. The findings contribute valuable insights to the field of sustainable building retrofitting, offering a promising solution for enhancing the resilience and energy efficiency of existing URM buildings.
