Abstract

The article presents a groundbreaking approach to the sustainable production of cellulose phthalate derived from Ixora coccinea Linn., focusing on its application in industrial dye removal from wastewater. The study highlights the functionalization of nanocellulose using phthalic anhydride in a choline chloride-urea system, a green and non-toxic solvent. This process improves the solubility and reduces the high crystallinity of cellulose, leading to enhanced adsorption properties. The research provides an in-depth analysis of the structural, thermal, and surface modifications that occur after phthalylation, using advanced characterization techniques such as FT-IR, XRD, FE-SEM, TG/DTA/DSC, BET, and zeta potential measurements. The results demonstrate that cellulose phthalate exhibits superior adsorption capabilities for methylene blue dye compared to unmodified nanocellulose, making it a promising material for water treatment and biomedical applications. The study's novelty lies in the use of eco-friendly solvents and the detailed physicochemical analysis, offering insights into the potential of functionalized cellulose for environmental and biomedical applications.
